Our current Western civilization shakes its collective head at the atrocities committed by the Roman Empire. How far removed is our civilization from the Roman era?

The difference between pre-industrial civilizations and recent civilizations is a matter of degree. Admittedly, the degree of difference is pretty noticeable. Leaders of empires at one time would slaughter everyone in a city that did not agree to surrender fully when being invaded. That doesn’t happen these days, but as we see with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, conquerors still depend on death and destruction to take over territory. And as we see in the case of leaders such as Donald Trump, corruption and lack of moral standards is still common. The nature of humans ensures this will always exist.
