Peter McPhee

Maximilien Robespierre: Hero or Monster of the French Revolution?

Peter McPhee is a professor emeritus at the University of Melbourne after retiring in 2009 as the university’s first Provost. He has held a Personal Chair in History since 1993. He has served as Deputy Dean, Acting Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Head of the Department of History, President of the Academic Board and  Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).


He has published widely on the history of modern France including “A Social History of France 1780-1880”, “Revolution and Environment in Southern France” and “Living The French Revolution 1789-1799”, in addition to “Robespierre: a Revolutionary Life”.
